Low Back Pain

  • Symptoms: Achy or sharp pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion in the lower back.
  • Location: Typically centered in the lower back, not extending past the buttocks.
  • Causes: Muscle strain, back injury, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis.
  • Key Point: Low back pain is usually just pain across the lower back.

Sciatica

  • Symptoms: Burning, stinging, or sharp pain that starts in the low back and shoots down one leg.
  • Location: Felt on the back of the leg, often affecting movement.
  • Causes: Bulging or herniated disc, arthritis, spinal stenosis, aging, or compression by the piriformis muscle.

How We Treat Low Back Pain and Sciatica

pt-

Repeated Motion

For conditions like nerve irritation due to disk bulges or spinal stenosis, a repeated movement program can help.

Stabilization Exercises

These target deep abdominal and spinal muscles. By retraining these muscles, they help stabilize the spine and alleviate pain caused by incorrect muscle engagement.

Strengthening and Stretching

To target weak core postural muscles and build strength around the trunk, pelvis and hip musculature to decrease risk of injury. Also aims to improve flexibility, reducing the risk of stiffness and tightness causing nerve irritation and poor posture.

Manipulation/Mobilization

For stiffness in the spine, therapists may perform mobilization or manipulation techniques to improve motion and decrease pain linked to the leg.
